NES

This gene encodes a member of the intermediate filament protein family and is expressed primarily in nerve cells.
Protein class

Plasma proteins

Predicted location

Intracellular

Single cell type specificity

Group enriched (Cardiomyocytes, Endothelial cells, Sertoli cells, Adipocytes, Smooth muscle cells)

Immune cell specificity

Not detected in immune cells

Cell line specificity

Cell line enhanced (AF22, HUVEC TERT2, LHCN-M2, RH-30, SuSa, WM-115)

Interaction

Forms homodimers and homotetramers in vitro. In mixtures with other intermediate filament proteins such as vimentin and alpha-internexin, tis protein preferentially forms heterodimers which can assemble to form intermediate filaments if nestin does not exceed 25%. Interacts with FHOD3 (By similarity).

Molecular function
