This adhesion is a critical first step in infection, enabling the bacterium to colonize, invade host tissues, and spread systemically. Adhesin A also plays a role in modulating host immune responses, potentially suppressing early immune activation to allow bacterial persistence. It exhibits immunogenicity, stimulating the host to produce specific antibodies that can block adhesion.
