• Introduction
• Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) is a protein found on the surface of T cells (a type of immune cell) that acts as a checkpoint to help regulate the immune system. It plays a crucial role in preventing T cells from attacking healthy cells, including cancer cells, by binding to its ligands, PD-L1 and PD-L2. Immunotherapy drugs called immune checkpoint inhibitors can block PD-1, releasing the brakes on the immune system and allowing T cells to better target and destroy cancer cells.
