- CD4 is a glycoprotein found on the surface of T helper cells, a subset of white blood cells. Its primary function is to act as a co-receptor that assists the T cell receptor (TCR) in recognizing antigens presented by antigen-presenting cells (APCs) on MHC class II molecules. This interaction is crucial for initiating an immune response, particularly in coordinating the activation of other immune cells, like B cells and cytotoxic T cells, through the release of cytokines. CD4 also serves as the primary receptor for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
