- The NCAM1 gene encodes the neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (NCAM1), a cell surface glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. NCAM1 is crucial for cell-to-cell interactions, particularly in the nervous system and during development. It mediates homophilic (like-like) binding between neurons and between neurons and muscle cells, playing a vital role in neurite outgrowth, axon guidance, and synaptic plasticity.
Beyond the nervous system, NCAM1 (also known as CD56) is involved in the expansion of T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and natural killer (NK) cells, contributing to immune surveillance. It interacts with fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) and other extracellular matrix components, influencing signal transduction pathways involved in cell growth and differentiation. Aberrant expression of NCAM1 is implicated in various neurological disorders and cancers.
