- Introduction
- MAPT, the gene encoding the Tau protein, is a microtubule-associated protein (MAP) primarily expressed in neurons of the central nervous system. Its main physiological function is to promote the assembly and stability of microtubules, which are crucial components of the neuronal cytoskeleton. Microtubules are essential for maintaining neuronal structure, facilitating axonal transport of organelles and vesicles, and supporting synaptic function. The proper functioning of Tau is intricately regulated by various post-translational modifications, with phosphorylation being the most critical.
