- The AFP gene encodes alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a major plasma protein primarily produced by the yolk sac and liver during fetal development. AFP levels typically decrease significantly after birth, with only trace amounts found in healthy adults.
In adults, while its physiological function is not fully understood, AFP is a significant tumor marker. Elevated AFP levels can be indicative of certain cancers, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (testicular and ovarian cancers). It is used in the diagnosis, monitoring treatment response, and detection of recurrence for these malignancies. Additionally, AFP levels can be elevated in some non-cancerous liver conditions.
During pregnancy, AFP levels in maternal serum are used as a screening tool for certain fetal abnormalities, such as neural tube defects and chromosomal disorders.
