APOBEC1: The Catalytic Engine of ApoB mRNA Editing
APOBEC1 or apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide 1 is a cytidine deaminase that serves as the catalytic subunit of a multi-protein RNA-editing complex that converts a single cytidine residue in the Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) mRNA transcript. This C-to-U editing reaction, which is exclusive to the small intestine, changes the glutamine codon (CAA) into a premature stop codon (UAA), resulting in the translation of a truncated protein that is known as ApoB-48. ApoB-48 serves as a critical structural component required for chylomicron assembly and secretion during dietary fat absorption. ApoB-100, a full-length protein that is produced from the unedited transcript, is synthesized by the liver.

Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the cytidine deaminase family of enzymes. It has been shown to form a multiple-protein editing holoenzyme with APOBEC1 complementation factor (ACF) and APOBEC1 stimulating protein (ASP). This holoenzyme edits C-to-U nucleotide bases in apolipoprotein B and neurofibromatosis-1 mRNAs. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
