APOBR: An Alternative Receptor for Apolipoprotein B-Containing Lipoproteins

APOBR is a low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family member and a less well characterized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor. It is believed to serve as an alternative or “backup” receptor to the canonical LDLR for Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)-containing lipoproteins in lipid metabolism, but it's exact physiological role and contribution to lipoprotein metabolism remains to be determined. It may also be involved in lipid clearance in specific tissues or under certain metabolic conditions. The continued discovery and characterization of this novel lipoprotein receptor is an active area of cardiovascular research.

Background

Apolipoprotein B48 receptor is a macrophage receptor that binds to the apolipoprotein B48 of dietary triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins. This receptor may provide essential lipids, lipid-soluble vitamins and other nutrients to reticuloendothelial cells. If overwhelmed with elevated plasma triglyceride, the apolipoprotein B48 receptor may contribute to foam cell formation, endothelial dysfunction, and atherothrombogenesis.
