Avian influenza - known informally as avian flu or bird flu - refers to "influenza caused by viruses adapted to birds". The version with the greatest concern is highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The nucleoprotein (NP) of the virus binds the RNA genome and acts as a key adaptor between the virus and the host cell.
