BPI: A Potent Endotoxin-Neutralizing Protein of Neutrophils

Bactericidal/Permeability-Increasing Protein (BPI) is a potent antimicrobial protein stored inside the azurophilic granules of neutrophils and released upon exposure to Gram-negative bacteria. BPI has two important functions, both of which are related to the protection against infection and its systemic inflammatory consequences. BPI is directly cytotoxic to Gram-negative bacteria as it binds the bacterial outer membrane and increases its permeability. More importantly, BPI binds to lipopolysaccharide (LPS or endotoxin) with extremely high affinity. LPS is the inflammatory molecule produced by the Gram-negative bacteria cell wall that can, when released in sufficient amounts, lead to septic shock. By directly neutralizing LPS, BPI has the capacity to block this massive inflammatory response.

This gene encodes a lipopolysaccharide binding protein. It is associated with human neutrophil granules and has antimicrobial activity against gram-negative organisms.
