Background
Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from specialized neuroendocrine cells located throughout the body. These cells share characteristics of both nerve cells (producing electrical signals) and endocrine cells (producing hormones and peptides). While rare, NETs can occur in virtually any organ, with the most common primary sites being the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and lungs. Their clinical behavior is highly variable, ranging from indolent, slow-growing tumors to aggressive, rapidly metastasizing malignancies.
