Background
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a highly regulated and essential biological process that enables multicellular organisms to control cell numbers, remove damaged or unwanted cells, and maintain tissue homeostasis without eliciting an inflammatory response. Unlike necrosis, which is a pathological and often lytic form of cell death that releases cellular contents and triggers inflammation, apoptosis is a "clean" process characterized by a series of distinct morphological and biochemical changes that lead to the orderly dismantling and packaging of the cell into apoptotic bodies, which are then efficiently cleared by phagocytes.
