TNF is a cytokine produced by macrophages, T cells, and other immune cells. It exists in both membrane - bound and soluble forms. TNF binds to two main receptors, TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1) and TNF receptor 2 (TNFR2). TNF has diverse functions, including induction of apoptosis in tumor cells, activation of immune cells, and promotion of inflammation. In inflammation, TNF stimulates the production of other cytokines and chemokines, recruits immune cells to the site of infection or injury, and increases vascular permeability. However, excessive TNF production can lead to tissue damage and is associated with diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis.
