Explore cardiovascular and metabolic disease research with the help of Creative Biolabs' anti-ABCG1 recombinant antibodies. ABCG1 is an important transporter responsible for mediating cholesterol efflux to HDL, thus playing a key role in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway and anti-atherogenic processes. The high-quality rAbs offered by Creative Biolabs are specially designed to help you study lipid metabolism, macrophage biology, and mechanisms to facilitate cholesterol removal, among other aspects.

ABCG1: A Key Transporter in Reverse Cholesterol Transport

ATP-binding cassette subfamily G member 1 (ABCG1) is a cholesterol transporter involved in maintaining cellular lipid homeostasis. The transporter is widely expressed in macrophages, endothelial cells, and various tissues. ABCG1's main function is to facilitate the efflux of excess cellular cholesterol, particularly to mature forms of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles. The transporter is thus a major player in reverse cholesterol transport, an important anti-atherogenic pathway where cholesterol is removed from the atherosclerotic plaques in artery walls by being delivered from foam cells to HDL particles. For this reason, normal ABCG1 function is essential for preventing cholesterol accumulation in the artery wall.

Alternative Names

ABCG1; ATP-Binding Cassette, Sub-Family G (WHITE), Member 1; Homolog Of Drosophila White; ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter 8; WHT1; WHITE1; White Protein Homolog (ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter 8); White Protein Homolog; ABC8

Background

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein is a member of the White subfamily. It is involved in macrophage cholesterol and phospholipids transport, and may regulate cellular lipid homeostasis in other cell types. Six alternative splice variants have been identified.

Protein class

Metabolic proteins, Transporters

Predicted location

Intracellular, Membrane (different isoforms)

Single cell type specificity

Cell type enhanced (Rod photoreceptor cells, Syncytiotrophoblasts)

Immune cell specificity

Group enriched (neutrophil, eosinophil)

Cell line specificity

Cell line enhanced (hTCEpi, JURKAT, MCF7, MOLT-4, OE19, RPMI-8226)

Interaction

Homodimer; disulfide-linked (PubMed:16702602). Homooligomer (PubMed:16702602). May form heterodimers with several heterologous partners of the ABCG subfamily. Forms heterodimers with ABCG4 (PubMed:27228027). Interacts with CAV1; this interaction regulates ABCG1-mediated cholesterol efflux (PubMed:24576892).
