AQP1: A Water Channel Fueling Angiogenesis and Cell Migration
Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) is a transmembrane protein that forms channels for rapid water transport across the cell membrane. AQP1 has a critical function in urine concentration in the kidney and regulation of tissue fluid balance in organs such as lung and brain. In cancer, AQP1 is upregulated in the microvasculature of many aggressive tumors. AQP1 has been shown to promote endothelial cell migration and angiogenesis by allowing rapid changes in cell shape and volume. AQP1 is a potential target for anti-angiogenic cancer therapy.

Background
This gene encodes a small integral membrane protein with six bilayer spanning domains that functions as a water channel protein. This protein permits passive transport of water along an osmotic gradient. This gene is a possible candidate for disorders involving imbalance in ocular fluid movement.
