CCL3: The Macrophage Inflammatory Protein-1 Alpha (MIP-1α)

The inflammatory chemokine C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 3 (CCL3), also known as macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1-alpha), is produced by macrophages, lymphocytes, mast cells and other cell types. As an important component of the early inflammatory response, CCL3 is a strong chemoattractant for monocytes, T-cells and neutrophils and signals through the chemokine receptors CCR1 and CCR5. CCL3 is also of interest in virology as it is one of the natural ligands for the CCR5 co-receptor used by HIV to gain entry into T-cells. Competitive inhibition of HIV entry has been observed with high levels of CCL3.

CCL3 (C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 3) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with CCL3 include Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 and Chagas Disease. Among its related pathways are PEDF Induced Signaling and Toll-like receptor signaling pathway. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include identical protein binding and kinase activity. An important paralog of this gene is CCL3L3.
