Background

The PSMA gene encodes a type II transmembrane protein that is highly expressed in prostate tissues and is involved in the metabolism of N-acetylated alpha-linked acidic dipeptides. It is a member of the M28 family of zinc-dependent carboxypeptidases and plays a critical role in the hydrolysis of substrates, further implicated in prostate cancer biology. Due to its restricted expression pattern and upregulation in prostate cancer, PSMA has become a target for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, particularly in imaging technologies and targeted therapies.
