Histones and DNA associate to form nucleosomes, the basic repeating units of chromatin. Nucleosome subparticles (or subnucleosomes) composed of dimers of H2A/H2B, tetramers of H32/H42 and single molecules of H1, all associated with DNA of various lengths, can be released by micrococcal nuclease digestion and urea treatment.
