Malarial diseases in humans are caused by five species of the Plasmodium parasite: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, P. knowlesi and P. malariae. Each of these species is transmitted to the human via a female Anopheles mosquito that transmits Plasmodium parasites in the stage of sporozoites.
