Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the degradation of extracellular matrices of various tissues during embryonic development, organogenesis, and disease progression, and their family members have similar structures. In addition to the functions of the MMPs family that regulate the degradation of extracellular matrices in traditional studies, recent studies have also found that they are involved in the development of tissues and organs, and play a role in certain molecular signaling and factor expression. Matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8), also known as neutrophil collagenase, was first discovered in neutrophils. The study found that MMP-8 mRNA is expressed in both human dentin cells and pulp tissue. As an important interstitial collagenase in the matrix metalloproteinase family, MMP-8 is involved in tissue alteration and signal transduction during tooth development, but so far it's expression and function in dental tissues has been less studied.
