Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) forms a major structural component of ribosomes which provides a mechanism for decoding mRNA information into amino acids/proteins through the process of translation. rRNA plays a key role in accurate positioning of mRNA as well as peptidyl tRNA, and also plays a structural role in peptidyl transferase activity by generating scaffolds where ribosomal proteins are assembled. rRNA is generated inside nucleolus, which is localized in nucleus of the cells and contains genes essential for encoding rRNA.
