SMIM1

This gene encodes a small, conserved protein that participates in red blood cell formation. The encoded protein is localized to the cell membrane and is the antigen for the Vel blood group. Alternative splicing results in different transcript variants that encode the same protein.
Protein class

Blood group antigen proteins, Transporters

Predicted location

Intracellular, Membrane (different isoforms)

Single cell type specificity

Cell type enhanced (Erythroid cells, Proximal tubular cells, Distal tubular cells, Granulosa cells)

Immune cell specificity

Immune cell enriched (eosinophil)

Cell line specificity

Group enriched (HEL, Hep G2, K-562)

Interaction

Homooligomer; disulfide-linked.

Molecular function

Blood group antigen
