- Mycobacterium tuberculosis CFP-10 (Culture Filtrate Protein 10) is a small secreted protein of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, often studied alongside its interacting partner ESAT-6 (Early Secreted Antigenic Target 6). It is encoded by genes within the RD1 (Region of Difference 1) locus-a genetic region critical for bacterial virulence. CFP-10 plays a role in bacterial invasion of host cells, particularly macrophages, and helps the bacterium establish intracellular infection. It has strong immunogenicity, specifically stimulating cell-mediated immunity, such as the activation of memory T cells. This property makes CFP-10 a key component in tuberculosis diagnostic tests (e.g., interferon-gamma release assays), as it can distinguish between latent and active infections. It is also a promising candidate for tuberculosis vaccines, as targeting CFP-10 may inhibit bacterial virulence and enhance host clearance of the pathogen.
