Background

Adenylosuccinate synthetase is a key enzyme in the de novo and salvage pathways of purine nucleotide biosynthesis. It catalyzes the formation of adenylosuccinate from inosine monophosphate (IMP) and aspartate, with the concomitant hydrolysis of GTP. This reaction is a branch point, leading exclusively to the synthesis of adenine nucleotides (AMP, ADP, ATP), making it critical for cellular energy and nucleic acid synthesis.
