Background

Avian leukosis virus (ALV) infects mainly chickens but can also infect pheasants, partridges and quail. It belongs to the Alpharetrovirus genus of the family Retroviridae. It is divided into subgroups A, B, C, D, E, J and K, depending on their viral envelope proteins which determine immune response and host range. ALV p27 is a capsid protein and group specific antigen. When infected with ALV, p27 antigen will be present in chicken serum, egg albumen, meconium and cloacal samples. Thus, antibodies specific to p27 antigen could be used for diagnosis for ALV.
