AQP3: A Key Aquaglyceroporin in Skin Health and Cancer
Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) is an aquaglyceroporin, a class of aquaporins that can transport both water and small neutral solutes such as glycerol and urea. It is widely expressed in the epidermis, where it plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration, elasticity, and barrier function. Glycerol transport mediated by AQP3 is essential for adipocyte lipid metabolism and energy supply in proliferating cells. In disease conditions, AQP3 dysregulation has been implicated in the development of dry skin and other skin disorders. In cancers such as skin, colon, and breast cancers, overexpression of AQP3 has been reported to enhance cell proliferation and migration.

Background
This gene encodes the water channel protein aquaporin 3. Aquaporins are a family of small integral membrane proteins related to the major intrinsic protein, also known as aquaporin 0. Aquaporin 3 is localized at the basal lateral membranes of collecting duct cells in the kidney. In addition to its water channel function, aquaporin 3 has been found to facilitate the transport of nonionic small solutes such as urea and glycerol, but to a smaller degree. It has been suggested that water channels can be functionally heterogeneous and possess water and solute permeation mechanisms. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2015]
