AURKC: The Meiotic Aurora Kinase
AURKC is a serine/threonine kinase related to AURKA and AURKB both in structure and function. It is highly homologous to these other two aurora kinases but is very tightly regulated and is expressed almost exclusively in meiotic cells of the testis and ovary. Aurora Kinase C is a chromosomal passenger protein involved in both meiosis I and meiosis II, where it is likely to have overlapping function to AURKB in these germ cells to promote proper chromosome segregation. Genetic defects in AURKC result in the formation of large-headed multi-flagellated spermatozoa and male infertility. In some cancer types, AURKC is aberrantly re-expressed where it may contribute to aneuploidy.

Background
This gene encodes a member of the Aurora subfamily of serine/threonine protein kinases. The encoded protein is a chromosomal passenger protein that forms complexes with Aurora-B and inner centromere proteins and may play a role in organizing microtubules in relation to centrosome/spindle function during mitosis. This gene is overexpressed in several cancer cell lines, suggesting an involvement in oncogenic signal transduction. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
