Drive neuroscientific discovery with Creative Biolabs' premium anti-CALB1 recombinant antibodies. As an important intracellular calcium-binding protein, Calbindin-D28k (CALB1) plays an important role as a calcium buffer in neurons and as a molecular marker for distinct neuronal subtypes. Creative Biolabs' top-tier anti-CALB1 recombinant antibodies are an essential tool for probing the role of CALB1 in neurodegenerative disorders, epilepsy, and the underlying biology of calcium homeostasis in the brain.
CALB1: The Major Calcium Buffer in Neurons
Calbindin 1 (CALB1), also known as Calbindin-D28k, is a cytosolic calcium-binding protein of the troponin C superfamily. CALB1 encodes a multi-calcium binding domain protein which is an effective intracellular calcium buffer. CALB1 rapidly binds free calcium ions to regulate the amplitude and duration of the calcium signal and guard against excitotoxicity, the deleterious effects of elevated intracellular calcium. CALB1 is expressed at high levels in distinct populations of neurons, including Purkinje cells of the cerebellum and dentate gyrus granule cells in the hippocampus. The selective loss of CALB1-expressing neurons is a feature of several neurodegenerative diseases, such as Huntington's and Parkinson's disease.

Background
CALB1 (Calbindin 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with CALB1 include Huntington Disease, Huntington Disease Without Motor-Dementia Phenotype, Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes. Some biological pathways that are related to CALB1 include Activated PKN1 stimulates transcription of AR (androgen receptor) regulated genes KLK2 and KLK3 and Endocrine and other factor-regulated calcium reabsorption. Gene Ontology (GO) Annotations related to this gene include GO: 0005509 | calcium ion binding, GO:0005506 | vitamin D binding. A paralog of interest for this gene is CALB2.
