CAMKK1: An Upstream Kinase in Neuronal Calcium Signaling
CAMKK1 is a serine/threonine kinase that plays an upstream role in the calcium-induced signaling module that leads to activation of the downstream CAMK kinases CaMKI and CaMKIV. The calcium signal is transduced when an increase in intracellular calcium concentrations causes calcium to bind to the calcium-binding protein calmodulin. The calcium/calmodulin (CaM) complex then binds and activates CAMKK1. CAMKK1 then phosphorylates and activates CaMKI and CaMKIV. The CAMKK-CaMK signaling module has been shown to be present in the brain where it is involved in several neuronal processes, including neuronal differentiation and activity-dependent gene expression.

Background
The product of this gene is a member of the Serine/Threonine protein kinase family. It is also a member of the Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase subfamily. This protein is a component of the calcium/calmodulin-dependent (CaM) kinase cascade. Three transcript variants encoding two distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.
