CAMP: The Precursor to the Human Cathelicidin LL-37
The Cathelicidin Antimicrobial Peptide (CAMP) is the single cathelicidin member of the antimicrobial peptide family found in humans. Cathelicidins are synthesized as 18 kDa precursor proteins called hCAP-18, which are found in high levels in neutrophils and epithelial cells at barrier surfaces. CAMP itself, as the precursor protein, is not active. In the presence of infection or inflammation, proteases such as proteinase 3 cleave the C-terminal end of the precursor protein to release the active 37-amino acid peptide LL-37. LL-37 is a broad-spectrum, potent antimicrobial that kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi by disrupting membrane integrity. The peptide is also a potent immunomodulatory molecule, with roles in inflammation, wound repair, and angiogenesis.
