CCL8: The Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-2 (MCP-2)

C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 8 (CCL8) also known as Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-2 (MCP-2) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that is part of the MCP subfamily, which shares homology with CCL2 (MCP-1) and CCL7 (MCP-3). It is secreted by monocytes and other cell types and acts as a chemoattractant for monocytes, T-cells, eosinophils and basophils. This is in part due to the protein being able to signal through several chemokine receptors such as CCR2, CCR3 and CCR5. CCL8’s promiscuity may suggest a general role in coordinating inflammatory responses across a range of disease states.

Background

Chemotactic factor that attracts monocytes, lymphocytes, basophils and eosinophils. May play a role in neoplasia and inflammatory host responses. This protein can bind heparin. The processed form MCP-2(6-76) does not show monocyte chemotactic activity, but inhibits the chemotactic effect most predominantly of CCL7, and also of CCL2 and CCL5 and CCL8.
