Background
Initial protein purification work documented four IgG subclasses in the dog, labeled γ1, γ2a, γ2b, γ2c. A second purification effort confirmed a four-subclass system which was subsequently labeled IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4 and organized like the human system based on the prevalence of the subclasses in healthy dogs. Separately, the sequence of four IgG subclasses (labeled IgG-A, IgG-B, IgG-C, IgGD) were documented from cDNA data which demonstrated modest sequence homology and receptor binding characteristics with the four human IgG subclasses.
