Background

Stx2A refers to the A subunit of Shiga toxin 2, produced by Escherichia coli. This subunit is the enzymatic portion of the toxin. After the holotoxin is bound to a cells surface through the Stx2B subunit, the A subunit is internalized. Once inside the cell it inhibits protein synthesis by modifying the 28S rRNA. Stx2 is generally considered more potent then Stx1, and is heavily linked to severe cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome.
