Background
Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a small non-enveloped virus belonging to the D species of the Enterovirus genus within the Picornaviridae family. The prototype strain of EV-D68, Fermon, was originally isolated from pediatric patients with pneumonia and bronchiolitis in the United States in 1962. Except the strain Fermon, all other EV-D68 strains can be divided into four primary clades, namely A, B, C, and D based on VP1 nucleotide sequence.
