Background
These cells exit the thymus as naive Foxp3⁻ CD4⁺ cells but differentiate into Foxp3⁺ Tregs in peripheral tissues (like the gut) in response to antigens and TGFbeta. They are crucial for tolerance to harmless non-self antigens, such as dietary proteins and commensal microbiota.
