Background
M2e, or the ectodomain of matrix protein 2, is a highly conserved region found in the influenza A virus. Due to its conservation across many influenza A strains, it has been a target of research for universal influenza vaccines. The M2e protein plays a role in the virus's ion channel activity, which is essential for viral replication.
