MSMB: A Prostate-Secreted Protein and Cancer Biomarker

Microseminoprotein-Beta (MSMB) also known as Prostate Secretory Protein 94 (PSP94) is a small secreted protein that is produced in enormous amounts by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. It is one of the most abundant proteins in the seminal plasma. The exact physiological role of MSMB is not known, but it is believed to play a role in anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory processes. In cancer, MSMB expression is frequently and strongly downregulated in the prostate tumor. Common variants in or near MSMB that are associated with prostate cancer risk have also been identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS), suggesting that MSMB is of great interest in prostate cancer research.

Background

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the immunoglobulin binding factor family. It is synthesized by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland and secreted into the seminal plasma. This protein has inhibin-like activity. It may have a role as an autocrine paracrine factor in uterine, breast and other female reproductive tissues. The expression of the encoded protein is found to be decreased in prostate cancer. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms are described for this gene. The use of alternate polyadenylation sites has been found for this gene.
