Methamphetamine

Methamphetamine (contracted from N-methylamphetamine) is a strong central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that is mainly used as a recreational drug and less commonly as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity.

Methamphetamine (USAN) (also known as methamf- etamine (INN), Nmethylamphetamine, methylmphe- tamine, and desoxyephedrine)is a psychosti- mulant of the phenethylamine and amphetamineclass of psychoactivedrugs. When used illicitly, methamph- etamine is commonly referred to as"crystal meth", "meth", "crystal", "ice", "p", "shabu" or "glass". Methamphetamineincreases alertness, concentration, energy, and in high doses, may induce euphoria, enhance self-esteem and increase libido. Methamphetamine has highpotential for abuse and addiction, activating thepsychological reward system bytriggering a cascading release of dopamine in the brain. Methamphetamine is FDA approved for the treatment of ADHD and exogenous obesity. It is dispensed in theUSA under the trademark name Desoxyn.
