This gene encodes a member of the neuroD family of neurogenic basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins. Expression of this gene can induce transcription from neuron-specific promoters, such as the GAP-43 promoter, which contain a specific DNA sequence known as an E-box. The product of the human gene can induce neurogenic differentiation in non-neuronal cells in Xenopus embryos, and is thought to play a role in the determination and maintenance of neuronal cell fates.
Protein class
Disease related genes, Human disease related genes, Transcription factors
Predicted location
Intracellular
Single cell type specificity
Cell type enhanced (Enteroendocrine cells, Excitatory neurons, Bipolar cells, Cone photoreceptor cells)
Immune cell specificity
Not detected in immune cells
Cell line specificity
Cell line enriched (SCLC-21H)
Interaction
Interacts with TCF3, TCF4 and TCF12. Interacts with CDC20. Efficient DNA-binding and transcription activation require dimerization with another bHLH protein (By similarity).
Molecular function
Activator, Developmental protein, DNA-binding
