Background
rt, or Reverse transcriptase, is an enzyme encoded by retroviruses and some retrotransposons. It catalyzes the synthesis of DNA from an RNA template, a process known as reverse transcription. This enzyme also typically possesses RNaseH activity, which degrades the RNA strand of the RNA-DNA hybrid. Reverse transcriptase is essential for the replication of retroviruses, including HIV, making it a primary target for antiviral drugs.
