Serum amyloid P component (SAP, also known as Pentraxin 2; APCS gene) is a component of the humoral arm of innate immunity involved in resistance to bacterial infection and regulation of tissue remodeling. SAP plays an important role in the regulation of extracellular matrix deposition. SAP is an important component of amyloidosis, where it promotes persistence of amyloid fibrils through binding and consequent stabilization. A specific antibody against SAP promotes clearance of amyloid deposits in patients with systemic amyloidosis. Moreover, SAP has been shown to inhibit lung fibrosis in preclinical models by regulating macrophage polarization.
