Enables DNA-binding transcription activator activity, RNA polymerase II-specific; RNA polymerase II transcription regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity; and protein heterodimerization activity. Contributes to sequence-specific DNA binding activity. Involved in several processes, including Malpighian tubule tip cell differentiation; chaeta morphogenesis; and nervous system development. Part of transcription regulator complex. Is expressed in several structures, including adult mesothoracic segment; ectoderm; extended germ band embryo; presumptive embryonic/larval system; and somatic precursor cell. Orthologous to human ASCL1 (achaete-scute family bHLH transcription factor 1).
