SLC44A1, also known as Choline Transporter-Like Protein 1 (CTL1), is an important transporter of choline, an essential nutrient and precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and major phospholipids. SLC44A1: A Key Choline Transporter (CTL1)
SLC44A1, or Choline Transporter-Like Protein 1 (CTL1), is a multi-pass transmembrane protein that mediates the transport of choline. CTL1 is a solute carrier family 44 member 1 protein that is ubiquitously expressed in many tissues and cell types, including epithelial cells, neurons and immune cells. SLC44A1 mediates the intermediate-affinity transport of choline from the extracellular fluid into the cell. The intracellular choline is a key substrate for two major pathways: for the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (in cholinergic neurons) and for the synthesis of the membrane phospholipid phosphatidylcholine (in all cells). Variants in SLC44A1 are linked to hearing loss and SLC44A1 expression in T-cells is important for T-cell activation.
