SLC44A2: A Neutrophil Antigen and Choline Transporter

Solute Carrier Family 44 Member 2, also called Choline Transporter-Like Protein 2 (CTL2 or SLC44A2), is a choline transporter that is particularly interesting in immunology for its highly expressed presence on the neutrophil surface. It is also present on endothelial cells and in the inner ear. SLC44A2 is most commonly known in transfusion medicine as the human neutrophil antigen 3a (HNA-3a). Antibodies to HNA-3a are the leading cause of transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), a severe and often fatal transfusion complication. Antibodies can form de novo in the setting of a blood transfusion or can be formed in pregnancy, with fetal cells acting as a persistent antigen source after birth. HNA-3a is also the target of autoantibodies in some cases of autoimmune inner ear disease.
