Background

This enzyme, often denoted ArnB or PmrE, is crucial for polymyxin resistance in bacteria. It catalyzes the transfer of an amino group from L-glutamate to UDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-L-mannose, forming UDP-4-amino-4-deoxy-L-arabinose. This sugar nucleotide is then incorporated into lipid A, modifying the bacterial outer membrane and reducing its affinity for cationic antimicrobial peptides like polymyxins.
