Background

budB, or Acetolactate synthase, catabolic, is an enzyme involved in the degradation of branched-chain amino acids, such as valine and isoleucine. Unlike anabolic acetolactate synthase (ALS), which is involved in amino acid synthesis, the catabolic version breaks down these amino acids, contributing to carbon and nitrogen recycling. It is important in environments where these amino acids are abundant.
