Background
Cytosine deaminase is an enzyme that catalyzes the deamination of cytosine to uracil. This enzyme is important in pyrimidine metabolism and is also a target for gene therapy in cancer, where it can be used to convert a prodrug, 5-fluorocytosine, into the cytotoxic agent 5-fluorouracil.
