Background
Dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) is an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of folate in bacteria, fungi, and plants. It catalyzes the condensation of p-aminobenzoate (PABA) with 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin pyrophosphate to form dihydropteroate. DHPS is a major target for sulfonamide antibiotics due to its essentiality in microorganisms.
