Background

lacA, or Galactoside O-acetyltransferase, is an enzyme encoded by the lac operon in Escherichia coli. It catalyzes the transfer of an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to non-metabolizable β-galactosides, thereby detoxifying them and preventing their interference with lactose metabolism. Its physiological role is in protecting the cell.
